Job Vacancies in Research Training Network:
Turbulent Boundary Layers in Geospace Plasmas
HPRN-CT-2001-00314;
Research Training Network “Turbulent Boundary Layers”, sponsored by the
European Commission, invites applications for research positions at the
following locations:
- Swedish Institute of Space Physics, Uppsala, Sweden,
-
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Didcot, UK,
- Ruhr Universitaet Bochum, Germany,
-
Space Research Centre, Warsaw, Poland,
-
Laboratoire de Physique et Chimie de l’Environment, Orleans, France,
-
Istituto di Fisica dello Spazio Interplanetario, Roma, Italy.
The
main objective of the network is to study physical mechanisms for transport of
mass, energy and momentum at boundary layers which separate plasmas of different
origin in geospace. The network will use available space measurements to assess the role of turbulence and other
mechanisms in the transfer processes at the magnetopause. The scientific
research programmes are focused on space observations and their understanding by
means of computer simulations and theoretical approaches. The research methods
include modern techniques of data analysis and visualization, advanced
analytical methods, multi-dimensional computer simulations for non-uniform
magnetized systems, statistical approach to time series analysis, and complex
system physics. The network will organize regular workshops in different countries, about two per year where the
young researchers will play a major role in arranging the venue, agenda and
presenting their work. The training programme will also include presentation techniques, project management tools, internet publishing and
software tools.
The positions for postdocs are for one up to two years
starting September, 2002. In strongly motivated cases, outstanding PhD students may be
considered. The applicants must be aged 35 years or less (with dispensation for
compulsory military or civil service and childcare) and hold
citizenship of an EU or EU associate
country, or be residents of the EU for at least the last 5
years. Women are encouraged to apply, as are young researchers from less
favoured regions of the EU. Applications can only
be made to one of the laboratories established in a state which is (i) different
from your nationality and (ii) where you have not spent more than 12 of the last
24 months.
More information on the network can be
obtained from World Wide Web pages at http://cluster.irfu.se/rtn/.
Applications should include CV
with a list of publications, copies of undergraduate and PhD degree certificates,
names of and contact info for two professional references. Applications and
inquiries should be sent to the network co-ordinator, Kristof Stasiewicz (http://cluster.irfu.se/ks/)
with a copy to the appropriate contact person listed on the network pages http://cluster.irfu.se/rtn/contacts.html.
